KARNATAKA STATE LAW UNIVERSITY

  

      The Karnataka State Law University was established in January, 2009 under Karnataka State Law University Act, 2009 of Government of Karnataka. The University with the avowed object of providing quality legal education is making all endeavors for the growth of legal education in Karnataka by including appropriate components to professionally orient the students. It is the single largest affiliating Law University in the whole of Asia having 109 affiliated Law colleges spread over the entire State of Karnataka with the strength of 26,000 students. The University is also operating its own Law School at the main campus in Hubballi.

 

      The University campus is spread over a sprawling 55 acres of beautiful landscape at Navanagar, in Hubballi. The University has magnificent Law School with State of Art classrooms, auditorium, Pariksha Bhavan (Examination Block), Guest House, a Boys Hostel, Girls Hostel, Officers Residences, Sports Ground, etc.

 

      The University is catering to the needs and requirements of legal education by bringing uniformity in methods of imparting education and conducting examinations across the State, providing appropriate optional courses for horizontal mobility. At present the University offers 3 year LL.B. Programme, 5 years B.A.,LL.B., B.B.A.,LL.B., and B. Com. LL.B. programmes at its affiliated law colleges and 5 years B.A.,LL.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A.,LL.B. (Hons.) programme at its Law School. The University is also offering Master Degree Programmes in discipline such as Constitutional and Administrative Law, Corporate and Commercial Law, IPR Law and Criminal Law as well. Apart from this same certificate courses in Information Law, Water Law, Aviation Law, etc. and P. G. Diploma Courses are also offered by the University. In addition, the Ph.D. and LL.D. programmes are also offered on the campus.

 

      The University Library is truly a knowledge house of the University having great collections of books, bound volumes, 27 Law Journals and 5 online legal databases such as Manupatra, Westlawasia, Hein Online, SCC & JSTOR - UGC-INFLIBNET.

 

With the objective to bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in the legal profession, the KSLU is providing opportunities to the students to intern with the Government Departments, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, State Law Commission, Judges of the High Court and best of the Law Firms in the Country.

 

      Vision of the University is “To transform Karnataka State into a legally conscious society, by providing quality legal education that is professionally competent and socially relevant so as to realize the constitutional primordial goal of social, economic and political justice and secure human rights to every common man. Strive to promote the culture of law and justice in the institutions of state, non-state organizations and every individual by providing informal legal education, training and legal service. Above all, to inculcate in every one a spirit of high moral and human values.” In this direction the University is making all endeavors through academic and extension activities to realize the vision.

 

      To provide a suitable environment wherein the law students can hone and chisel their professional skills, the KSLU has been conducting two Moot Court Competitions, one in International Law and another in Public Law every year. Apart from the same, the University conducts special lectures on various emerging issues. Even two prestigious endowment lectures namely, Late shri L.G. Havanur Endowment Lecture and Late Shri R.G. Desai Endowment Lecture are organized every year. The eminent judges like Justice Abdul Nazir, Justice V. Gopal Gowda, Justice Rajendra Babu, Justice Mohan Shantangoudar and Justice Ravindra Bhat, Justice Nagarathna, Justice Bopanna etc. have delivered the lectures.

 

      To encourage the students and improve their skills every year the University organizes Student Law Festival consisting of client counselling, paper presentation, etc. The University in order to update the knowledge of the teaching faculty, has conducted Faculty Development Programmes on themes such as Public Law, Corporate and Commercial Law and Human Rights of Vulnerable sections.  

  

      For having completed 12 years of its existence, the University has conducted 10 decennial celebration lectures. The eminent academicians, judges of higher judiciary have delivered lectures on emerging issues of law. The University has been organizing academic programme on emerging issues and eminent Judges, Advocates and academicians provide discourse.   

      

      The University is also involved in research activities. Eleven research projects on Non state judicial systems in Karnataka are on the verge of completion. This is completely funded by the University. Apart from the same, three research centers have been established in the University, namely, 1. Centre for Research in Democracy and Constitutional Government 2. Centre for Research in Water Law 3. Vijnaneshwara Study Centre. Currently Centre for Research in Democracy and Constitutional Government in collaboration with Karnataka State Bar Council Bengaluru has under taken a research project on changing facets of Legal Profession in Karnataka. The Centre for Water Law has also undertaken project of Water Management of Hubballi and Dharwad.  The Vijnaneshwara Study Centre is organizing a National Webinar on “Socio-legal values in Mitakshara, Vachana, Dasa and Folk Literature in Karnataka: An Exploration.” One credit course (online) Translation Workshop is conducted in the University to help students appearing for judicial examinations and equip them to publish law literature in English and Kannada. Career Guidance Workshops are conducted at seven zones of the State to guide the final year students on future opportunities in the legal profession. Presently 54 Ph.D. research scholars are pursuing their doctoral degree in the University and its research centers. The University periodically publishes, KSLU Law Journal, the Student Law Review, material on Para-legal Certificate Course, Nyaya Chintana Series and Kannada Kali etc..
